The Khajuraho temples are located in a parkland landscape. After India got independence in 1947, the landscape setting was characterized by semi-desert and scrub. The archaeological park resembles an English public park dotted with mown grass, rose beds and ornamental trees.
The development of landscape archaeology is a matter of debate and it raises questions about the earlier landscape of Khajuraho and the original relationship between the temple complex and its adjoining area. Records of what the original landscape might have been are not there. It is well- known that the temple complex was used by an elaborate community of priests and in the tenth century the Indian gardens were predominantly tree gardens. They wewere no lawns or herbaceous flowering plants.
